2021: (Year 62)

  • 1st January, 2021 the 5th Principal of Spotswood College(2010-2018) Mark Bowden is awarded the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in the New Year honours list. Two former students Denise Guy and Garry Carnachan) also received an award.
  • The 1st March roll was 872.
  • At 11.59pm on Sunday 14th February, Alert Level 3 was declared on the Auckland area and Alert Level 2 on the remainder of New Zealand. This was in effect for 72 hours until midnight on Wednesday 17th February, with Auckland dropping down to Alert Level 2 and the rest of NZ back to Alert Level 1.
  • At 6am on Sunday 28th February, Alert Level 3 was re-declared on the Auckland area and Alert Level 2 on the remainder of New Zealand. This was in effect for 7 days until 6am on Sunday 7th March, with Auckland dropping down to Alert Level 2 and the rest of New Zealand  back to Alert Level 1.
  • Tuesday 9th March, due to the Covid-19 coronavirus regulations, the 2021 1960-1979 Reunion organising committee postponed the event scheduled for Easter (2-3 April), and set a new date of Labour Weekend 23-24 October.
  • On Tuesday 16th February, a sub-tropical low over the North Island created gale force southerly winds over 100kph that caused roofing iron to lift on the new gymnasium roof.
  • From Term 2, Spotswood College was part of the Ka Ora, Ka Ako/Healthy Lunches programme that provided every student in the College with a free healthy school lunch daily.
  • In June, a nationwide programme to offer free period products to school students began.
  • On Wednesday 30th June, over 300 Year 8 students from contributing schools attended the "Taster Day".
  • At 11.59pm on Tuesday 17th August, due to the Covid-19 Delta variant, Alert Level 4 was declared on all of New Zealand initially for 72 hours. This was extended twice, until 11.59pm on Tuesday 31st August when all of New Zealand south of Auckland moved down to Alert Level 3 until 11.59pm on Tuesday 7th September, and then down to Delta Level 2 until Monday 4th October. Schools re-opened on Thursday 9th September with the wearing of face masks being recommended.
  • The NZQA pushes back NCEA and Scholarship exams by 2 weeks to 22nd November - 14th December.
  • Due to the Covid-19 Alert levels being declared, the "Enchanted Forest" Ball scheduled for Saturday 11th September was cancelled.
  • The school production "Bugsy Malone", was postponed until Term 1, 2022.
  • 23rd September ex-pupil Maurice Bevin (1967-1969) completes a 1440kilometre walk from John o' Groats to Land's End (UK) to raise awareness for Prostate Cancer. The walk took 33 days.
  • Sadly on 17th September, we recorded the passing of Alec Hutchinson MA who was the Deputy Principal of the College from 1964-1983. Alec had been our oldest living ex-staff member and was in his 98th year. 
  • On Monday 12th October, the government announces a vaccine mandate that will require all workers in the health and education workforce to be fully vaccinated by 1st January, 2022. This includes all teachers and support workers who have contact with children and students. 
  • Saturday 23rd October- A Reunion Dinner for the 1960-1969 decade was held at The Plymouth Hotel with 76 attending. Due to the covid-19 Delta situation no registrations could be accepted from Overseas, and the Auckland and Waikato regions. 
  • Year 13 Drama student Stacey Hayes was selected to travel to The Globe in London in July, 2022 to attend a three-week immersion into all things Shakespearean.
  • Tuesday 16th November - education staff throughout New Zealand who had not received their first covid-19 vaccination were stood down. The 1st January,2022 double vaccination deadline still applied.
  • Friday 3rd December, New Zealand changes from the Alert Level system to the new Covid Protection Framework (CPF known as the "Traffic Light System" (Red, Orange, Green- based on the DHB vaccination rate for each region).
