1969 Mus.B Victoria University. Won a scholarship to Brussels Conservatoire of music(Arts College), and won the title of Laurent de Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. Played the piano, organ, harmonium and harpsichord. The Mons Conservatoire have named a room after Allen to recognize his contribution.

Julius West
New Plymouth-based Julius West, formed in 1967 from two school bands (The Soul Agents and The Afterthought), was a drawcard in Taranaki until disbanding in 1969. With a progressive soul, rock and blues-focused repertoire, Julius West was the first in the region to include music from then new-to-the-world Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and Cream, intermixed with Detroit R&B, and a range of trending heavier sounds from the likes of Deep Purple and Steppenwolf. The band also retained crowd-favourite elements of its earlier playlists (Beatles, Bee Gees, Spencer Davis, Rolling Stones, and CCR). Julius West played occasionally in Wellington and backed visiting artists including Larry Morris and the Chicks. Following some early line-up changes band members were Max McLeod (vocals), Wayne Cavaney (guitar), Charlie Winter (keyboards), Keith FitzPatrick (bass) and Grant Houston (drums). Following disbanding, individual members cut a four-track, regrettably low-quality, EP at a local recording studio.
